Australia vs India, Mitchell Starc, spikes, women’s test, scores, results, report

Mitchell Starc has won praise from players and pundits alike after a small but grand gesture to his Australian women cricket colleagues.

The Australian left-arm spearhead has been accompanying the women’s team during their multi-format cricket series against India, with Starc eager to spend more time with his wicket-keeper wife Alyssa Healy before bubble life takes hold ahead of the T20 World Cup and Ashes.

And it’s a good reason he was on deck at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

LIVE DAY FOUR: Australia vs India

With Australia struggling on day one of the four-day Test to find the right areas and pitch the ball up, Starc asked his colleagues if they were wearing the necessary longer spikes.

They weren’t.

As such, the Australian opening bowler went out and bought some longer spikes for the bowlers to use.

“It was actually the first day’s play, when Stella Campbell was bowling,” former Australian captain Lisa Sthalekar revealed in commentary on Fox Cricket.

“She had to put a bit of sawdust on (the crease). The bowlers came off and Starc said, ‘Have you got your long spikes?’

“The girls were like, ‘We’ve just got our normal spikes’.

“So what he did was he actually went out and bought all the bowlers long spikes so they have a different set just in case, depending on the conditions.”

The longer spikes helped Australia’s bowlers get a foothold in the game, as they kept the pressure on and improved their lines and lengths on day two and certainly into day three.

Speaking to ABC Radio on Saturday, debutant Stella Campbell who had a strong third day with the ball picking up two wickets and getting some soaring bounce, commented on Starc’s influence and classy gesture.

“Getting my baggy green has been the highlight of my career,” Campbell told ABC Radio.

“To have my own to keep is pretty incredible and something I’ve dreamt of, and to be presented it by Mitch Starc was amazing. That was so special.

Campbell herself confirmed Starc’s kind gesture: “I was slipping on the first day with my front foot, so Mitch Starc asked if we had any long spikes,” she said.

“I’ve never worn any before and none of us had any. So he went out and bought them all for us.

“I used them for the first time today.”

India eventually called time on their innings at 8d-377, with Australia struggling at 4-143 – 84 runs adrift of making the tourists bat again.
